Global Gateway Stronger together through sustainable investment

Through its Global Gateway initiative, the EU plans to mobilise up to 300 billion euros in the next few years in order to finance infrastructure projects in the Global South. For example, there is a project for supporting the generation of green hydrogen in Namibia, while others support the creation of vaccines in other African countries.

The Global Gateway Forum on 25 and 26 October in Brussels brings together representatives of governments of the European Union and the whole world with the private sector and financial institutions. Together, politicians and economists will discuss sustainable infrastructure support in the countries of the Global South. State Secretary and Special Representative for International Climate Policy Jennifer Lee Morgan is representing Germany.

“We are here in order to proceed together”

Several 100 million euros are to be committed at the two-day Global Gateway Forum in contracts and declarations of intent, announced Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the start of the event. She emphasised that, since the Global Gateway initiative was founded by the EU two years ago, 66 billion euros had already been promised for transformation projects.

The aim is to promote worldwide investment in infrastructure as well as sustainable growth and resilience. In her opening speech at the event in Brussels, Commission President von der Leyen emphasised: “We are here in order to proceed together.”

The Global Gateway was started with the Africa-Europe investment package, committing approx. 150 billion euros to closer cooperation with African partners. As an example, von der Leyen cited a project conducted with Egypt to connect the north and south coast of the Mediterranean by means of a powerful fibre optic cable for the first time. In addition, she announced contracts for critical raw materials with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

In 2023, 90 large-scale Global Gateway projects were launched in the areas of Digital, Energy and Transport, aiming to improve health, education and research worldwide. The projects particularly concern green and digital transformation at the global level.

The Global Gateway strategy is a Team Europe concept in which the European Union, EU member states and European lending institutions work together. The projects are intended to meet the needs of the partner countries and benefit the local population in the long term. This is not only conducive to the development of the economy and society in the EU partner countries; in the EU member states, too, the private sector can invest and remain competitive while maintaining the highest environmental and industrial safety standards, as well as sound budget management.
