The European Political Community (EPC) is a platform for political coordination among the European countries. The forum is open to all countries in Europe that share the EU’s values.

French President Emmanuel Macron suggested the initiation of a European Political Community in his speech at the closing event of the Future Conference in the European Parliament on 9 May 2022.

The first meeting of the EPC took place in Prague on 6 October 2022. In addition to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the meeting was attended by 44 heads of state and government.

Those invited include the 27 EU states, the EU accession candidates (Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Moldova, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine) and the potential EU accession candidates (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo), as well as Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The event will also be attended by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

The Russian war of aggression has shown that a values-based, well-coordinated foreign policy is a prerequisite for a Europe of geopolitical stature. To achieve this status, the EU will have to broaden its horizons. To this end, it is holding regular meetings of the heads of state and government of all European countries in the European Political Community Forum.

The EPC is an important platform for exchange between the EU member states and countries that are not part of the EU. After the inaugural meeting of the EPC last October Scholz said: "The entire European community has met here as equals to exchange views on the important issues of our time, which include security, energy supply, climate and the economy, and to expand our collaboration. Those whose voices are not often heard also came to the table. That, too, is a consequence of this era of change.”

The purpose of the European Political Community (EPC) is to promote political dialogue and collaboration in the interest of Europe as a whole, with a view to enhancing security, stability, and prosperity on the European continent.

The EPC does not replace any existing organisations, structures or processes, nor is it intended to create new ones at this point. In particular, it does not serve as a substitute for the EU accession process.

The forum will meet once or twice a year in the future. The Republic of Moldova is hosting the second EPC Summit on 1 June 2023. This meeting will build upon the foundations laid at the first EPC Summit held in Prague in October 2022. Planning provides for the participating countries to take turns organising the EPC Summits, alternating between EU and non-EU countries. This is the first EPC Summit to be hosted by a non-EU state. The next Summits will be hosted by Spain and the United Kingdom.
