Strengthening the European pillar of NATO is an absolute priority for the German government “because it is in our interests that Europe can now stand firmly on its own two feet”, emphasised Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Federal Chancellery. This is important in order to preserve freedom, security and prosperity in Europe, he said, and

Germany will work together with its NATO partners to continue supporting Ukraine in defending itself against Russian aggression. Pressure on Russia should be increased so that Russia finally chooses the path of serious negotiations, said Merz. All of this serves one goal: “Peace in Ukraine and for Ukraine and security in Europe.”

The most important points from the press conference in brief:

  • Defence spending: At the NATO summit in The Hague , NATO decided to substantially increase defence spending. The implementation of these resolutions was in full swing and making great progress, said the Chancellor. NATO continues to play a key role in times of major geopolitical upheaval.
  • Cohesion in Europe: It is important to keep Europe together and not allow it to be divided. “We need a strong united Europe like never before”, emphasised Federal Chancellor Merz. This was the only way to preserve freedom, security and prosperity in Europe. Cooperation with the USA is also important.
  • Support Ukraine: Russia is continuing its brutal war against the Ukrainian civilian population. The aim is to achieve a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia together with European partners and the USA. European interests must be safeguarded in the peace solution, and there must be “no peace decided over our heads.” However, Ukraine must decide which territorial arrangements it will accept.
