Breast milk makes infants fit for life. In the long term, infants that were breastfed are significantly less likely to become overweight in later childhood or adult life than those who were never breastfed. And their mothers also benefit from breastfeeding: for instance, they have a lower risk of developing certain types of cancers. It is therefore recommended that babies are fed exclusively on breast milk for the first four to six months of their lives.
