Mexico City, 09.06.17: In the evening, Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico, welcomes Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel with military honours.
The Chancellor is impressed by the many reforms Mexico has set in motion, especially in the economic field.
These have led to a significant improvement in the investment climate, according to Merkel.
Merkel thanks Mexico "for the clear commitment to free trade". Both leaders hope to quickly conclude the new EU-Mexico free trade agreement and to intensify political cooperation.
"We are also pleased that we can work together in the area of the Paris agreement and climate protection," Merkel said in Mexico City.
The first day in Mexico ends with a dinner given by the Mexican president.
Mexico City, 10.06.17: The next morning, Federal Chancellor Merkel meets with human rights activists and journalists. They talk about the human rights situation and the importance of journalistic freedoms.
Mexico’s Germany Year featured more than 1,000 events attracting more than 3.5 million visitors. The two heads of government attend the closing event.
Mexico’s Germany Year involved mainly events in the fields of science, business, sustainability, art and culture.
This has been a very successful year during which not only politicians talked, but, above all, the people of our countries had the opportunity to get to know each other better and to learn more about the cultures, according to the Chancellor.
The last item on the programme in Mexico is a business event on the subjects of industry 4.0 and dual training.
Buenos Aires, 08.06.17: Arrival in the early morning. It is Chancellor Angela Merkel’s first visit to Argentina.
The first item on the programme sees Chancellor Merkel visit the "Templo Libertad" synagogue, accompanied by Rabbi Simón Moguilevsky (left).
The occasion is the unveiling of a Walcker organ which had been damaged in Germany during the National Socialist regime and which was restored in Argentina with German funding.
After 15 years, one of the city’s oldest synagogues can once again enjoy the sound of the organ built in Ludwigsburg in 1932.
"This synagogue is an impressive symbol of Jewish life in this city and in this great, world-renowned Jewish community."
Rabbi Moguilevsky then leads the Chancellor through the Jewish Museum.
Afterwards, the Chancellor meets with Mauricio Macri in the presidential palace Casa Rosada for talks.
Merkel praises the country’s "courageous reform path", which makes the country stronger economically and which opened it to the world.
She said she supports President Macri’s wish for an expeditious conclusion of a free trade agreement between the EU and South American states.
Another topic is the German G20 presidency. Merkel thanks President Mauricio Macri for the "extremely close cooperation" on the G20 agenda.
Chancellor Angela Merkel then visits the Park of Memories.
Here, she pays her respects to the victims of Argentina’s military dictatorship (1976-1983). According to official figures, more than 11,000 government opponents were killed or disappeared without a trace in that period.
Here, Merkel also meets relatives of some of those who disappeared. She praises the way the country has since addressed the crimes committed during that period.
Later, the Chancellor speaks to students at the city’s Polo Científico Tecnológico Science Centre.
The visit ends with a dinner with President Macri. The next morning, Merkel travels on to Mexico.
