Ukraine crisis International aid programme underway

The international community is called on "to improve the difficult situation of the people in Ukraine," said federal government spokesperson Steffen Seibert.

On Wednesday, government spokesperson Steffen Seibert explained the economic problems currently facing Ukraine. Difficulties existed even before the current crisis. The situation of the Ukrainian people was very much exacerbated, however, by the unlawful annexation of Crimea and the conflict in the Donbas region. "Against this background, the international community is called on to do all it can to improve the difficult situation of the people in Ukraine," said the government spokesperson.

Reforms are the precondition

In the eyes of the German government, the aid package for Ukraine is tied to reforms to be undertaken by the government in Kyiv. "Financial support from the International Monetary Fund and the EU can only be granted on the condition that Ukraine adopts and undertakes urgently needed reforms," said Steffen Seibert.

Germany is expressly supporting the efforts of the International Monetary Fund and the international community, also in view of the fact that it currently holds the G7 Presidency. The German government is in close contact with the IMF and its Managing Director Christine Lagarde, reported Steffen Seibert.
