At the summit in Helsinki, leaders of NATO states around the Baltic Sea will meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutter and EU Commission President Henna Virkkunen. The aim of the summit is to improve security in the Baltic. Concrete measures are to be put in place to secure undersea infrastructure such as data and power cables following several incidents in which cables have been cut.
These incidents have endangered supplies of electricity and raw materials which are vital to Europe’s economic development. Speaking before the NATO meeting in Helsinki, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the allies plan to develop surveillance structures and reinforce legal powers to boost security in the Baltic.
