Sunday, 29 January 2023: On Sunday the Federal Chancellor visited the La Boca district. A city guide explained that many Italian families settled here in the late 19th century and left their mark on the area.

His next stop was the Parque de la Memoria memorial site. It commemorates the thousands of opponents of the regime who were arrested and lost their lives after the military coup in Argentina in 1976.

"What this place holds up for us to see is that dictatorships cause human suffering, oppression and death, as we can also witness around the world nowadays,” said Federal Chancellor Scholz at the memorial site.

“It reminds us that democracy and freedom should not be taken for granted. They are something we must stand up for every day and that we must reinforce on a daily basis,” Scholz continued.

The next stop was the Pacheco Volkswagen production plant, where the Federal Chancellor took a tour. In addition to the management, Scholz also met representatives of the workers’ union.

In the afternoon, Federal Chancellor Scholz travelled on to Chile. Among those welcoming him at the airport in Santiago de Chile were Chile’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Ximena Fuentes) and the German and Chilean ambassadors.

Their conversation focused on issues such as cooperation on renewable energy and the association agreement between Chile and the EU. Germany and Chile also signed a cooperation agreement for the German-Chilean partnership on mining, raw materials and the circular economy.
