Later, Angela Merkel was presented with the Seoul Peace Prize in recognition of her work to foster European unification and reconciliation with Israel.
In the afternoon, the Chancellor thanked the cultural bodies sponsored by the federal government for their work. They represent Germany's cultural diversity, she said.
170 heads of a wide spectrum of cultural bodies including foundations, museums and memorial sites were invited.
In the evening the Chancellor spoke at a fundraising dinner. The funds raised went to a presentation in the Room of Names at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin.

It was the fifth time the group had met, but the first time that representatives of the federal states and migrants' organisations also attended.
Jürgen Klinsmann was a "great sportsman and a wonderful role model - well beyond the world of football", said Angela Merkel in the evening. Jürgen Klinsman is a former international player and coach of the German national team.
The German Football Association (DFB) named Jürgen Klinsmann honorary Germany captain.
