As of 1 October 2020
As of October, when a country is classified as a COVID-19 high-risk area, a travel warning will automatically be issued by the Federal Foreign Office. This is provided for in the new regulations on travel warnings and travel information adopted by the Cabinet on Wednesday.

Travellers should check the website of the Federal Foreign Office for information about their destination, and comply with any travel warnings in place.

The current regulations will remain in place until the end of September. As of 1 October, a uniform system for travel warnings and travel information based on the COVID-19 situation will be introduced for all countries:
- For countries designated high-risk areas, i.e. the vast majority of third states (all states apart from European Union member states, states that are part of the Schengen Area although they are not EU member states and the United Kingdom) the travel warning will remain in place for non-essential tourist travel.
- For countries that are not designated high-risk areas, a warning against non-essential tourist travel can be issued where restrictions are in place for travellers from these countries entering Germany or conversely where these countries have restrictions in place for travellers arriving from Germany. The overall situation in the country in question will be taken into account (including the capacities of the health system, and the way the country has dealt to date with outbreaks).
- Travellers to all other countries are asked to exercise particular caution.
The Robert Koch Institute publishes a list of international high-risk areas agreed with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The designation of high-risk areas is based on the number of infections and on a qualitative assessment. The Federal Foreign Office provides observations and assessments of the way the pandemic is being dealt with in other countries. The overriding goal of travel and security information is to protect health.
