Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron at the joint press conference
Fort de Brégançon, 20 August 2020: The Chancellor was invited by French President Emmanuel Macron to a meeting on the French Riviera.
It was the first time that Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte had welcomed Angela Merkel to the President's summer residence, Fort de Brégançon on the French Riviera.
The two leaders discussed many international issues.
The current situation in Lebanon and Belarus, the conflict over gas in the Eastern Mediterranean, and the military coup in Mali were on the agenda.
The two states intend to speak with one voice in the face of international crises. In Mali, they intend to continue the fight against terrorism in the region in spite of the military coup.
The country needs stability on the basis of democratic structures, said the Chancellor.
