Rome, 20 December 2021: Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz travelled to Italy for a one-day visit.
Welcome at Fiumicino airport in Rome.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi receives Scholz at his official residence, Palazzo Chigi.
Scholz called his inaugural visit a “particularly distinctive sign of the sound collaboration between our two countries. This is something we have both the capability and the will to build on in the coming years”.
The governments of the two countries will work on a joint plan of action to deepen bilateral relations. Providing the pandemic situation allows it, the plan was to meet again soon for large-scale government consultations, said Scholz.
However, the top priority was to focus health policy on coping with the coronavirus pandemic and protecting the population, said Scholz, adding that it was also necessary to strengthen the economy and social cohesion.
