Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya  in Berlin Chancellor advocates resuming political process

The Chancellor has welcomed Fayez al-Sarraj, Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya, to the Federal Chancellery for talks. At the meeting they discussed the situation in Libya since the start of the Libyan National Army’s military offensive.

Chancellor Angela Merkel advocated the resumption of the political process brokered by the United Nations and called on both sides to return to the negotiating table. 

Political dialogue necessary

Against this background, the Chancellor also welcomed the mediation efforts of Ghassan Salamé, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General. He proposed a ceasefire in Libya during Ramadan.

As well as the political conflict, Angela Merkel and Fayez al-Sarraj discussed matters relating to humanitarian access with a view to the difficult situation in the country’s refugee camps.
