Yemen conflict Rocket attack on Riyadh unacceptable

The German government condemns the latest rocket attack from Yemen on the Saudi capital Riyadh "in the strongest possible terms." This was stated by government spokesperson Seibert in Berlin on Wednesday. He called for an end to the rocket attacks, and a diplomatic resolution of the conflict in Yemen.

As government spokesperson Steffen Seibert said on Wednesday in the government press conference, there can be "no justification for such an act." The federal government therefore once again appeals "to all parties in the conflict in Yemen, to break the cycle of violence, immediately cease hostilities, revive political talks, and to completely lift the blockade for humanitarian aid."

Resolution only via diplomatic means

In addition, the federal government remains firmly committed to the efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen. It is the firm conviction of the federal government that a resolution of the Yemen conflict will only be achieved through diplomatic means, the government spokesperson confirmed.

Immediate ceasefire needed

A spokesperson for the Federal Foreign Office had already expressed on Tuesday that this further military escalation by the Houthi rebels will only exacerbate the conflict. In order to achieve the urgently-needed political solution, an immediate ceasefire is required, followed by negotiations under the aegis of the United Nations, the spokesperson added.
