New pilot project launched
The innovations include digital access to parcel stations, recurrent login for online shopping, concluding a mobile phone contract online, digital access management for buildings, and driving license checks for fleet management.
Strong partners on board
The Deutsche Post is to introduce registration for parcel stations. The design of a solution for access management for in-house staff and externals is also complete; five of the participating companies are involved. The four major participating banks are pursuing an application for opening online stocks and shares accounts and online accounts. Before these can become reality, however, a number of legal issues need to be clarified. In the field of e-commerce, Otto is to introduce an application for customer account registration and recurrent login.
VW, BMW, Bosch and Telekom are on board for an application that enables fleet management to check driving licenses. This application is currently exploring the possibility of a link to the central register of the Federal Motor Transport Authority. The telecommunications companies are going to enable the purchase of prepaid cards on the basis of the new solution. And the new digital vaccination certificate should also be mentioned. It is initially to be saved under the Corona-Warn-App, but can then be saved in the Wallet app produced for the ecosystem, so that it can be used in conjunction with proof of identity, for instance.
Business travellers can already check into about 50 hotels using the ID Wallet. This is how it works:
Their national identity cards are used to produce a basic digital ID or credential, which the traveller can use as proof of identity. The basic ID is filed in an ID Wallet and can be used for all other applications. For the hotel check-in, the employer also provides the business traveller with an employer certification including the billing address; this too is filed in the ID Wallet. At the hotel reception a barcode is scanned and both are communicated to the hotel system in line with all legal provisions. The traveller is checked in.
Network impact intended
The sum of these practical applications will develop their own momentum if they are rolled out swiftly across the board. Developers hope to see a low to medium six-digit number of users by the start of 2022. This would trigger millions of transactions. For the intended network impact, the ecosystem needs to attract about 15 per cent of potential users. The practical applications set out above bring us a good bit closer to this goal.
