The Chancellor issued a statement this evening, which said, "My thoughts are with those injured in particular. I wish them a speedy recovery." At the same time Angela Merkel expressed her solidarity with everybody in London.

The Chancellor made it clear that the United Kingdom can rely on Germany. Although the background to the attack must still be investigated, she said, "I would like to reiterate on behalf of Germany and its people, in the fight against every form of terrorism we stand determinedly shoulder by shoulder with the United Kingdom".

Thomas de Maizière says much points to terrorist background

Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière also commented on events in the British capital. Germany security services are in close contact with their British colleagues, he said. The motive behind this brutal act is still not clear. "Many things point to a terrorist background," stressed Thomas de Maizière. "At this difficult time we declare our close solidarity and stand by our British friends."

During the attack near the Houses of Parliament in London on Wednesday afternoon several people appear to have been killed and many more were injured.
