The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is particularly important in the modernisation of administrative processes: both for a more efficient use of resources and for strengthening the process. This also applies to migration and, in particular, to the visa process.
The Federal Cabinet has now been briefed by Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt on the joint initiative "Introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in visa processes and migration administration" and has taken note of a key issues paper. The aim of the initiative is to modernise the processes involved in the immigration of skilled workers. This should significantly reduce processing and waiting times. Processes will be accelerated and made more secure. This benefits both employers and qualified workers from abroad.
Application submissions digitalised in the visa process
The Federal Government has already successfully digitalised the visa application process. More than 70,000 visa applications have been accepted and processed through the Federal Foreign Office's online application portal since the online application process was launched. The potential of AI is clearly evident, especially in regard to the security of the process.
The next crucial step is the use of AI to support processing. Specifically, the use of AI should help to deal with the increasing volume of applications more efficiently and support the examination of visa applications on a case-by-case basis.
