New law for asylum seekers and "tolerated foreigners"
In future asylum seekers and "tolerated foreigners" are to be allowed to work after three months, making it easer for them to earn their own living sooner. This is laid out in a bill that the Cabinet has now adopted. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Serbia are to be recognised as safe countries of origin.

The classification as "safe country of origin" entails the statutory assumption that there is no threat of political persecution in these states. Applications for asylum by citizens of these states, which have no prospects of success, can then be processed more rapidly.
Chance to overturn this assumption in individual cases
Asylum seekers can, however, overturn this statutory assumption in their individual case. Every individual has an opportunity to prove that he or she can expect to be a victim of political persecution "in spite of the general prevailing situation in the country of origin".
The bill also cuts the waiting period before asylum seekers are permitted to work. Asylum seekers and "tolerated foreigners" are to be allowed to work after a period of three months in future. This will enable them to earn their own living sooner.
