President Poroshenko welcomes the Chancellor in front of his official residence, Gorodetsky House.
It is the first time Angela Merkel has visited Ukraine since the conflict with neighbouring Russia broke out.
The welcome was followed by a private meeting.
Talks continued over lunch.
Afterwards the Chancellor and the President met the press.
The Chancellor called for initiatives from both sides to bring about a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine.
Angela Merkel met the mayors of several Ukrainian towns and cities and a representative of the Crimean Tatars.
The Chancellor's brief visit was rounded off by a meeting with Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
Germany is to provide financial assistance to help Ukraine rebuild infrastructure destroyed by fighting in the east of the country.
