Centenary of women's suffrage
One hundred years ago this year women in Germany were first given the right to vote. A first step towards more gender equality. There were further steps on a path which has not always been an easy one.
1958: Elisabeth Schwarzhaupt is the first woman to be appointed as federal minister
1972: Annemarie Renger was the first female President of the German Bundestag
1984: The first all-female leadership of a parliamentary group in the German Bundestag (The Greens)
1997: Marital rape is a punishable offence
2001: Women are allowed to serve in the Bundeswehr and engage in armed conflict
2005: Angela Merkel becomes the first woman to serve as Federal Chancellor
2007: Parental allowance is launched, enabling men to take parental leave
2017: Women make up 31 per cent of members of the 19th Bundestag
17.01.2019: The German Bundestag commemorates the centenary in a special ceremony
