Washington, 09.02.15: Chancellor Angela Merkel arrives at the White House for her meeting with President Barack Obama.
After her meetings over the last few days in Kyiv and Moscow she discussed the latest developments in the Ukraine crisis with President Obama.
The main purpose of her visit though was to prepare the G7 summit to be held in June in Schloss Elmau. One major thrust of Germany’s Presidency is to empower women in the work place.
The Chancellor met female business and political leaders for an exchange of views.
Angela Merkel also used her visit to Washington to discuss the situation of the global economy.
Also on the agenda were a number of development issues for the G7 summit, including the Ebola crisis.
With a view to the Ukraine crisis Angela Merkel stressed that Germany and the USA stand for the same principles, including territorial integrity.
She cannot see a military solution to the Ukraine crisis, said the Chancellor. The close consultation and coordination between the USA and Europe is an important message for Russia.
President Obama and Chancellor Angela Merkel advocated the conclusion of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the USA and the European Union.
Before flying to Ottawa to meet Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Chancellor met World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim.
In the early evening she landed in the Canadian capital.
She had a private meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Here too the situation in Ukraine was the main focus.
The Chancellor reaffirmed her rejection of proposals to supply weapons to Ukraine.
The planned summit meeting in Minsk on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko could bring progress to efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
