Federal Chancellor Merz in Kyiv
Federal Chancellor Merz travelled to Ukraine to reaffirm Germany’s support for the country. But this partnership, Merz said, is by no means a one-way street: both countries benefit from the developments achieved by German and Ukrainian companies.

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has travelled to Kyiv, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. At a joint press conference, the Federal Chancellor emphasised that Germany would remain a reliable partner – even in difficult times. “The German people stand behind Ukraine and the German government stands behind the Ukrainian government. We will do everything we can to help Ukraine until this terrible war is finally over”, said Merz. The Chancellor was accompanied by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche and a business delegation.
The whole of Europe wants peace
The Chancellor emphasised that he wanted his visit to send a message at a time that was crucial for the future not only of Ukraine, but also of Europe as a whole. “Ukraine wants peace. Germany wants peace. The whole of Europe wants peace”, said the Chancellor. This peace, he said, needs to be negotiated; it must not be dictated; it must not be dictated to Ukraine, nor to Europe.
The Ukrainians are standing tall
Upon his arrival, the Chancellor emphasised: “I travelled to Kyiv today because Ukraine needs all our support in the coming weeks. If Russia is not stopped, sooner or later its war machine will turn against us.”
The Chancellor issued a reminder that the fifth winter of war is about to begin for the people of Ukraine. “Russia is bombing towns, residential buildings and heat and power stations. The Ukrainians are standing tall in the face of such terror”, said the Chancellor. He wanted to take the opportunity, he said, to let President Zelenskyy know: “You can continue to count on our support.” And he noted that the partnership with Ukraine is by no means a one-way street: “German and Ukrainian companies are working together to develop technologies that benefit both countries. This makes us safer and stronger.”
Humanitarian, financial and military aid: The existence of Ukraine as a strong, democratic and sovereign state is of central importance – including for Germany’s security. That is why the Federal Government stands in solidarity with the country. Here you can find information on how Germany is supporting Ukraine.
