Geneva, 11 June 2019: Chancellor Angela Merkel was invited to the 100th birthday celebrations of the International Labour Organization on Tuesday. The ILO works worldwide to improve working and living conditions.
Germany shares the goals of the ILO. With its worldwide achievements it demonstrates how important it is to work together across national borders, if we are all to thrive. "The economy must serve the people, not the people the economy." This was the central message of the Chancellor's speech.
Berlin, 12 June 2019: Following the Cabinet meeting, the Chancellor chaired the 4th meeting of the Digital Council. One focus is the implementation of the issues discussed at the previous meetings on the digital state and e-government and data and society.
In the afternoon Chancellor Angela Merkel received the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan. Germany and the United Arab Emirates have had a strategic partnership since 2004.
"We can step up cooperation with the United Arab Emirates, and this is our aim, in the fields of economic and energy policy, but also in humanitarian projects in Africa," said Chancellor Angela Merkel during his visit.
In a joint statement, the United Arab Emirates and Germany underlined their cordial links and stable partnership. The Crown Prince is deputy commander-in-chief of the United Arab Emirates armed forces.
Berlin, 13 June 2019: Thursday got underway with a meeting with Zoran Zaev, Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia. The country continues to see its future aligned with the EU and NATO. In April Zoran Zaev attended the Western Balkans meeting at the Federal Chancellery.
In the evening the Chancellor visited the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. She heard about the results of the climate research conducted there and found out about possible solutions to climate change.
Cologne, 14 June 2019: The Lord Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker welcomed Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday in the city's town hall.
"The best way to address housing shortages is to create new housing," said Chancellor Angela Merkel later at the annual meeting of the DMB (German Tenants’ Association). The German government is standing by its target of creating 350,000 new housing units a year.
After this the Chancellor was expected at the "Haus der Geschichte", a contemporary history collection, in Bonn.
The museum was celebrating its 25th anniversary. It was originally the brainchild of former Chancellor Helmut Kohl and houses a collection of German history as of 1945.
