France and Germany as Hosts

In April 2009 NATO will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of its foundation. The festivities on the German side will take place in Baden-Baden and Kehl, those on the French side in Strasbourg.
The Summit will focus on the 60th anniversary. The member states will be looking back on the alliance's development and success stories. At the same time, though, the Summit will also be looking at NATO's future.

The Summit will launch a process to design a new strategic concept. Talks will also cover the important issue of the relationship between the EU and NATO.

The 26 existing member states will be welcoming Albania and Croatia as new members. For the first time, the newly elected US president Barack Obama will also be taking part.

Programme for the Summit Meeting

The two-day Summit will begin on April 3rd in Baden-Baden with a meeting of participants from the 28 member states. First aspects of security policy will be discussed over a working dinner attended by heads of state and chiefs of government, as well as foreign ministers and ministers of defence. This will be preceded by a cultural event held at the casino.

On April 4th the programme will be continued in Strasbourg and Kehl. The focus will be on the meeting of the North Atlantic Council.

Details of the programme are currently under discussion. Once the programme has been finalised it will be published here.

Side events

Prior to and during the Summit Meeting a large number of events will be taking place that will examine the role of NATO. These events will not, however, form an official part of the Summit, even though some of them may be attended by representatives of NATO and the member states.
