Kosovo is a partner country of Germany’s development cooperation, and attended the Western Balkans meeting hosted by Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron in April at the Federal Chancellery.  

At the meeting in Berlin, the importance for the stability of the region of a conclusive, legally binding agreement on the complete normalisation of relations between Serbia and Kosovo was stressed. An agreement of this sort is crucially important for both countries as they move towards Europe, said a statement issued at the end of the meeting.

The Republic of Kosovo lies in South-Eastern Europe, in the Balkans. It was part of Yugoslavia and proclaimed its independence in 2008. To date this has been recognised by 114 states, including Germany. Kosovo has a landmass of almost 11,000 square kilometres and is home to around 1.8 million people. Almost 200,000 live in the capital Priština. Kosovo borders on Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro.
