Germany is looking forward to Euro 2024
Chancellor Angela Merkel offered her congratulations. "It will be a celebration of football and of coming together."
"My warmest congratulations to everybody who made it happen – who brought the Euro 2024 to Germany," said Chancellor Angela Merkel. "It will be a celebration of football and of coming together with fans from all countries. I am looking forward to it."
Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer spoke of a "great success" for the German Football Federation (DFB) and the entire sporting nation. Germany’s bid convinced UEFA with its cosmopolitan and reliable approach. "I am already looking forward to a huge, peaceful celebration of football!"
Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas said that the European Championships will give Germany a chance to demonstrate, "what we stand for in Germany: openness towards other countries and tolerance, liberty and respect". He also expressed his respect for Turkey, whose bid was excellent. "We are counting on the people in Turkey and in the people in Germany with Turkish roots to make sure that the European Championships are a celebration of football for all of Europe."
The first European Championships in reunited Germany
The motto of Germany’s bid for the Euro 2024 was "United by Football – united at the heart of Europe". This will be the second time that the German Football Federation (DFB) has hosted a European Championship. The first was in 1988 in what was then West Germany, but this will be the first time that the competition is staged in the reunited Germany.
Full support of the German government
The German government firmly supported the German bid to host the Euro 2024. During a visit to the Federal Chancellery on 27 March, the Chancellor assured DFB President Reinhard Grindel and the former Germany captain and DFB ambassador for Germany’s bid, Philipp Lahm, that they had the full support of the government.
Preparations for major sporting events like the European Championship are becoming increasingly complex. The support of the government is indispensable, even in the run-up to a bid.
In fact one part of the bid consists of government guarantees, in which the potential host country assures UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) of its readiness to cooperate on such legal matters as visas, customs and work permits, as well as matters relating to infrastructure, transport and public safety. These government guarantees were elaborated in close cooperation with the DFB, primarily by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Federal Chancellery.
