In a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Chancellor Angela Merkel has condemned the rocket attacks on Israel in the strongest possible terms. There is absolutely no justification for these attacks, she said.

Earlier, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier demanded an end to the attacks from the Gaza Strip.

“Hamas’ murderous rocket attacks on Israeli towns must be stopped immediately,” declared the Federal Foreign Minister to a daily newspaper. The Middle East needs a “coalition of reason”.

Speaking on Tuesday the Federal Foreign Minister called on all sides, “to avert a military confrontation which could spiral out of control”. The firing of rockets from the Gaza Strip has led to a situation that threatens to cause a spiral of violence and counter-violence. It goes without saying that Israel has the right to protect its citizens from rocket attacks, he added.
