Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel met French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysée Palace in Paris on Thursday evening for a cordial working dinner.

As the Federal Chancellor and the French President noted in their joint press statement ahead of the talks, the agenda focused on current international issues, mainly Afghanistan and Mali, as well as European policy matters, in particular the future of the European Union.

With regard to the deployment of the Federal Armed Forces in Mali, government spokesperson Seibert confirmed after the talks that the Federal Chancellor and the French President were coordinating very closely on this matter. The Federal Government is paying particular attention to reports of negotiations between Mali’s transitional government and the so-called “Wagner” group. “We view the deployment of a mercenary group of this kind with great concern,” said Seibert.

Germany and France cooperate very closely in all these areas, as was demonstrated once again at the meeting on Thursday.
