Iran’s missile attack on Israel is to be most strongly condemned. It threatens to further escalate an already tense situation in the Middle East. Iran risks a conflagration – this must absolutely be prevented. Hezbollah and Iran must immediately cease their attacks on Israel.

It was only thanks to Israel’s air defence systems and its allies that yesterday’s attack by Iran could for the most part be intercepted.

Together with our partners, we will continue to work towards agreement of a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. It must be followed by efforts to fully implement UNSCR 1701, which clearly states that Hezbollah must withdraw from the region bordering Israel.

This would create the possibility of return for people in northern Israel and at the same time be an opportunity for consolidating the Lebanese state.

With the 1st anniversary of Hamas’ terrible attack on Israel only a few days away, our thoughts are with the hostages and their loved ones. Their fate should be driving everyone towards reaching an agreement based on the proposals put forward by US President Biden.
