Federal Cabinet recommends election date
A new Bundestag will be elected next year. The Federal Cabinet now decided to propose 28 September 2025 as the election date. However, this is merely a recommendation: Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is ultimately responsible for setting the date.
The date next autumn was determined following talks with the federal states and the parliamentary groups, taking various factors such as school holidays into account.
Timeframe for the date
Article 39 of the Basic Law provides that the 21st Bundestag must be elected between 27 August 2025 and 26 October 2025. It is set out in Section 16 of the Federal Election Act that it is the Federal President’s job to choose the election date. The Federal Government usually suggests a date, and the election must take place on a Sunday or a public holiday.
Important constitutional body
The Bundestag is the parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany and its authoritative legislative body, making it the country’s most important institution. It is made up of representatives of the German people who are elected every four years in general, direct, free, equal and secret elections.
