Hackathon "Hacking for Global Health" From Kenya to Germany – Digital Solutions for a Healthy Future

72 hours, 50 young people, 11 teams, 9 mentors und numerous ideas for better health in Kenya – that is the outcome of the "Hacking for Global Health" hackathon. Held in November 2016, the hackathon (a portmanteau of "hack" and "marathon") brought inter-disciplinary teams together to develop innovative software solutions to improve child and adolescence health in the country.

Three teams are currently working on further developing their ideas and creating prototypes on the topics of micro insurance via smartphone app, a platform for taboo health topics, and improving the care of pregnant women through text message-based communication. Global networking is an important factor in this: right before the 3rd International German Forum the young developers will be in Germany to engage with important players of the health sector. Finally, the teams will present their solutions at the 3rd International German Forum in February 2017, where an expert jury will determine the winning team. "Hacking for Global Health" is an initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
