The Middle East peace process was the central point on the agenda of talks between Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, and Chancellor Angela Merkel. The Chancellor stressed that the aim must be a two-state solution within secure borders, assuring peaceful coexistence.
Angela Merkel once again spoke out in favour of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. She agreed with President Abbas that the peace process must be revived.

The aim must now be to identify acceptable terms, with the help of the US Special Envoy George Mitchell. "Germany would very much welcome this, and will support the process and take all necessary steps,” pledged the Chancellor.

Germany will also step up economic cooperation with the Palestinian territories. The planned economic commission on both sides represents a new era of cooperation, the Chancellor underscored. These should make it possible to better coordinate economic projects in future.

Angela Merkel expressed her concern primarily with respect to humanitarian developments in Gaza. She advocated supplying the power station in Gaza with fuel earlier than originally agreed.
