The intent is to provide support for film production in Germany over a period of three years. The strategy is currently being presented to the EU Commission in Brussels, which still has to approve it as a form of federal assistance to support a cultural project.
Assistance also available to smaller and mid-sized productions
Over the next three years, the German Government will reimburse each production company in Germany that produces a film and applies for assistance between 16 to 20 percent of the costs incurred for producing the film in Germany.
The measure is not intended to benefit only large productions. Companies with smaller and mid-sized projects with a budget of € 1 million or more for feature films can apply for partial reimbursement of production costs.
Creating more jobs
The aim is to make Germany a more attractive production location. Bernd Neumann, Minister of State in the Federal Chancellery and Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs, is convinced that the plan will have a fast and direct impact on German production companies and studios.
"In addition, Germany will become more attractive as a production location for major international production companies. This will help to create more jobs, and it will have an impact on the economy that will be considerably higher than the amount provided in government assistance,” explained Commissioner Neumann.
Who is eligible for assistance?
The detailed prerequisites for receiving government assistance according to the new strategy have been summarized by the German Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs in a set of guidelines.
