Germany has already recognised the new state. We extend a warm welcome to the Republic of South Sudan as a new member of the international community and we look forward to future cooperation.
With the declaration of independence, a long stretch in the Sudanese north-south peace process comes to a successful close. Germany has been involved all along, both within the framework of the various UN missions and on a bilateral level, through numerous contacts with actors in the north and in the south. The African states and the African Union have been instrumental in allowing a horizon of peace to dawn, after decades of civil war, for the people in the north and the south. Now begins the task of supporting South Sudan on its way to a stable commonwealth in which people can find peace, security and economic development. Germany will continue to provide its support.
