Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel meets Tzipi Livni
This afternoon, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni for informal talks.
The occasion of the meeting was the fifth anniversary of the kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Both reiterated the demand that Shalit be released immediately.
The current deadlock in the Middle East peace process was another focus of their discussion. The Federal Chancellor and Ms Livni agreed that a prompt resumption of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians was the order of the day.
