Chancellor Angela Merkel on the death of Osama Bin Laden

With a commando operation against Osama Bin Laden that ended in his death, US forces have scored a decisive victory against Al-Qaeda. Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her relief at the news to President Barack Obama.

Osama Bin Laden was responsible for the death of thousands of innocent people. On his direct orders and in his name terrorism has been carried into a large number of countries. He has targeted men, women and children, Christians and Muslims alike. Osama Bin Laden claimed to act in the name of Islam. The facts of the matter are, though, that he has trampled the fundamental values of both his own religion and all other religions.

Tonight the forces of peace have won through. International terrorism has not, however, been vanquished. We must all remain alert and vigilant.
