The newly elected Bundestag will have 622 members of parliament. According to the official provisional results, the CDU/CSU will have 239 seats, the SPD 146, the FDP 93, Die Linke 76 and the Grüne 68.
A coalition between the CDU/CSU and the FDP is the aim
After the parliamentary elections, the CDU/CSU and the FDP aim to form a new government. Coalition negotiations should begin no later than next week. Today the parties are discussing the outcome of the election.
The newly elected Bundestag must meet for the first time within 30 days.
